UOFT GRAD RETURNS DEGREES BECAUSE SCHOOL LAUNCHED ISRAELI APARTHEID WEEK

TORONTO - Howard Rotberg, a child of survivors and community activist who rallies against what he terms the “new antisemitism,” returned his degrees to University of Toronto because it is the institution that launched Israeli Apartheid Week in 2005, thus “allowing antisemitism by allowing the demonization, application of double-standards and the delegitimization of the state of Israel.”

In a letter to U of T President David Naylor, Rotberg, a graduate in the Department of History in 1973, said he specialized in the history of values and ideologies and had the honour of standing first among students. He returned that degree - as well as a law degree from 1976.

“I am ashamed that University of Toronto hosted the first Israeli Apartheid Week and continues to make its facilities available to this distortion of ‘free speech and respect for diversity,’” he wrote. “I read your Feb. 24 remarks on freedom of expression and diversity, and sadly, I feel that you misstate the basic issues. My university is now known as the birthplace of this vile hatefest.”
